interview with Steve Hobbs
How and when did you start working for Oxden Floors?
February 2003 – Lee asked me to join the team as we had previously worked together at a Quantity Surveying practice in London called Dearle and Henderson. Oxden Floors was starting to steadily increase in terms of projects and turnover and as a result additional staff were needed! Lee and I were also friends before we worked together in London so we knew very well what we could expect from the other!
If you weren’t working for the successful Flooring Contractor Oxden Floors, what do you think you would be doing now?
I would be following the career path I was on before joining Oxden Floors – Quantity Surveying.
What are the main changes you have seen in the flooring industry over recent years?
The project programmes are becoming increasingly challenging, as are site conditions!!
What are the current and future business priorities for Oxden Floors?
We have worked hard over the years to build up a strong relationship with many contractors, who both know and trust us to deliver their projects on time and on budget – these relationships are vital to us and we work hard to maintain them – the successful continuation of these relationships is always at the forefront of all we do.
What do you look for when you recruit someone?
The correct attitude is probably the most important factor – giving the correct impression can be just as important as the finished product!
What is your greatest achievement to date?
My family!
Who is or has been a role model to you?
Although it may sound like a cliché, my parents.
What 5 things would you put in room 101?
1) Percentages!! They do not tell the whole story!! 2) Facebook – call me old fashioned! 3) Variable speed cameras!! 4) Skinny mocha frappe latte ….. – a cup of tea will be fine!! 5) Laziness – you get out what you put in!
How do you relax?
When I get the chance, a pint and a read of magazine in peace and quiet.
Where is your favourite place?
We have a couple – Nice and New York (although we have not been to either since we have had the kids!!)
Wine or Beer / Tea or Coffee?
Beer please
What film, book, play or album has impressed you recently?
Jenson Button’s autobiography is a good read!
What sports, if any are you interested in?
Formula 1
Tell us something that might surprise those reading this!
Pass!!!
What is your motto in life?
It’s more a quote I read that I liked – ‘never look down on anyone unless it’s to offer them a hand up’ (Jesse Jackson)
